Armia “The Other Side”

Song is from the "Freak" album, released on November 27, 2009.

Armia is a legendary Polish alternative band, known for blending rock with elements of punk, metal, and experimental music. Since their inception in the 1980s, the band has evolved numerous times, consistently surprising listeners with innovative sounds and profound, often metaphysical lyrics penned by their frontman, Tomasz Budzyński.

“Freak”, released on November 27, 2009, is the band’s tenth studio album and stands out as a unique entry in their discography. Recorded in the summer and autumn of 2009 at Małe Studio in Puszczykowo, the album is marked by its entirely English lyrics, written by Tomasz Budzyński and Gerard Nowak. The album booklet features extended versions of the lyrics, presented as narrative passages, giving the record a literary touch.

Musically, Freak takes a bold leap into jazz and psychedelic rock territory. The compositions are rich, featuring extensive use of brass instruments like saxophones, French horn, and an African trumpet. The rock foundation of the album is influenced by psychedelia and stoner rock, abandoning the raw punk and heavy metal elements found in the band’s earlier works.

One of the standout tracks is “Grot the Engine Driver”, inspired by Stefan Grabiński’s short story “Maszynista Grot”. Additionally, some lyrics draw inspiration from the works of Syd Barrett, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd.

Another highlight is “The Other Side”, a hauntingly atmospheric track that explores themes of transcendence and duality. With its layered instrumentation and introspective lyrics, the song invites listeners on a journey to confront the unknown and reflect on life’s mysteries. The intricate interplay between the brass sections and guitars creates a cinematic, almost otherworldly soundscape, making it one of the album’s most memorable moments.

The album features numerous guest musicians, including Robert Brylewski (guitars, vocals, synthesizer) and Sławomir Gołaszewski (saxophone, ocarina, African trumpet). Production and mixing were handled by Robert Friedrich and Jakub Biegaj, with mastering by Jacek Gawłowski.

The cover art, designed by Tomasz Budzyński, incorporates a fragment of a painting by Joan Miró, emphasizing the artistic nature of the record.

“Freak” reveals a new side of Armia, showcasing their ability to innovate while maintaining the depth and multidimensionality for which the band is celebrated. This album is an invitation to experience Armia’s experimental spirit at its finest.
